This is very cute! I really like the color scheme you picked <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>

Don't worry about making shadows too distinct! Pick one light source and stick with it. If you're doing this you don't have to worry about putting obvious shadows where they don't belong (this is something I'm always afraid of doing <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a…" width="19" height="19" alt="^^;" title="Sweating a little..."/>). Adding larger shadows can really help to add depth to your work <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/n/n…" width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Nod"/>

(for example, notice how the right most sides of things and their bottoms are in shadow [link], and those shadows are pretty wide and obvious! They really make this look three dimensional)

The base colors you picked are very nice! Now it's time to pick some nice colors to complement them. Mainly your shadow and highlight colors (feel free to use more than just two or three colors; I often use 5+!). For example in [link] for her hair I used several different pinks and a purple for the darkest shadows. Colors tend to look the most natural when they are slightly different (not just the base color with white or black added to it). For example in [link] the vulpix's face contains a yellowish brown, brown brown, and a reddish brown.

Looks good, keep coloring! If you're having trouble figuring out how a certain shadow will land, try looking at photos of people. There are many generous deviants, like [link], who post really helpful stock photos <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>
